As dogs age, their risk of developing various health conditions increases. However, some diseases can occur regardless of age. Here, we briefly introduce common diseases and typical symptoms that dogs are prone to, which you can use to prevent and detect illness early at home. Typical diseases of dogs
Herniated Disc
Herniated disc disease occurs when discs are subjected to excessive pressure due to factors like obesity or over-exercise. It commonly affects long-bodied, short-legged dogs, such as Dachshunds and Corgis, and can develop in areas like the neck, chest, or lower back, causing pain. In severe cases, it may lead to nerve paralysis or, in the worst-case scenario, partial paralysis.
Patellar Luxation
Patellar luxation happens when the kneecap slips out of place due to falls or impact. This condition can occur in any dog breed but is particularly common in breeds like Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, Papillons, and Yorkshire Terriers. Repeated luxation can hinder movement and daily activities, gradually increasing pain and potentially leading to conditions like arthritis or a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Dermatitis
Dermatitis in dogs can be caused by various factors such as parasites, bacteria, fungi, endocrine disorders, or allergies, with allergic dermatitis becoming increasingly common in recent years. Dermatitis may be triggered by mites, house dust, or food, with symptoms like itching, redness, rashes, and hair loss.
Pyometra
Pyometra, or uterine infection, typically occurs in older female dogs that have not been spayed. Pus accumulates in the uterus and can become life-threatening if not detected early. It often appears 1-2 months after a dog’s heat cycle, with symptoms such as a swollen abdomen, discharge from the vulva, fatigue, loss of appetite, increased water intake, and higher volume and frequency of urination.
Kidney Disease
Kidney disease can result from aging, viral infections, or congenital defects. Once it develops, complete recovery is challenging, and the disease progresses quickly. Therefore, early detection through blood tests during annual health check-ups is crucial.
Mammary Tumors
Mammary tumors are commonly found in unspayed female dogs. If you feel a lump when touching your dog’s abdomen, please bring your pet to our hospital for an accurate diagnosis. About 50% of mammary tumors in dogs are likely to be malignant, and due to the wide distribution of mammary glands, tumors can appear in multiple locations. Spaying before the first heat cycle can prevent the disease with up to 99% effectiveness.
